About us

We envision a world where advanced materials drive sustainable solutions, enhance quality of life, and foster technological breakthroughs.

A major thrust of the scientific and technological progress within energy, construction, transportation, communication, environment, electronics, etc., is bound to the development of new, advanced materials with special, and often unique, properties. New materials are the backbone in modern society and indispensable for attaining more sustainability.  It is therefore important to have a visible research center at the highest international level, which is able to apply for, pursue, and define, research projects within materials research.

iMAT is an interdisciplinary research center at Aarhus University dedicated to addressing these needs. We bring together material researchers from different research fields to tackle the world’s biggest challenges. For example, we develop new solutions for energy storage and create sustainable building materials. Our research covers many topics. These range from the design of groundbreaking new materials over fine-tuning of existing materials at the atomic scale to engineering materials on a large scale by adjusting their geometry.

Our Mission

Developing innovative and competitive materials through interdisciplinary research and collaboration by AU scientists and industry to meet social and industrial needs!

Modern society faces significant challenges in finding more efficient and sustainable materials for the future. Therefore, by uniting researchers from various fields, we aim to create a hub for material research collaboration in Denmark. This hub serves as a gateway for other researchers and industry partners. Moreover, our collaborative approach ensures that our innovations are not just theoretical but are applied in real-world situations to benefit society. At iMAT, we foster a dynamic research environment where creativity and interdisciplinary collaboration thrive. By using our facilities and advanced technologies, we push the boundaries of materials science.

Our projects range from developing advanced materials for renewable energy systems to creating biocompatible materials for medical applications. Additionally, we focus on sustainable materials that can reduce the environmental impact of construction or chemical synthesis. Through these efforts, we strive to contribute to a more sustainable and resilient future.

Furthermore we are part of the Highway for Materials (Motorvej for Materialeviden) of the LINX association. We aim to connect AU and iMAT researchers with small and medium sized enterprises to work together on solving their material related problems. Thereby, university knowledge can be applied and the green transition in industry can be accelerated.

iMAT is also involved in EMAT the national infrastructure laboratory for functional energy materials of the DTU. Through this project iMAT members have access to the infrastructure and equipment of EMAT. New equipment in the research groups has been funded and is described in more detail in the iMAT infrastructure

Join us at iMAT as we explore the limitless possibilities of materials science and work towards solutions that will shape the future of our world.
